Βαλαάμ, το αρχιπέλαγος των μοναχών (Ελληνικοί Υπότιτλοι)
Στὸ ἀρχιπέλαγος περίπου πενήντα νησιῶν στὴν μεγάλη λίμνη Λατόγκα ποὺ εἶναι παγωμένη γιὰ ὀκτὼ μῆνες τὸν χρόνο, τὸ Βαλαὰμ εἶναι ἡ ἕδρα τοῦ παλιοτέρου μοναστηριοῦ στὴν Ῥωσία. Γιὰ αἰῶνες, ἡ φυσικὴ ἀγριάδα τῶν νησιῶν αὐτῶν παρέχει ἡσυχαστικὸ καταφύγιο στοὺς μοναχοὺς ποὺ προσέρχονται ἐκεῖ γιὰ τὴν ἀναζήτησι τῆς ἐν Χριστῷ τελειώσεως, μακρὰν τοῦ κόσμου, ἀναστατώσεων καὶ πειρασμῶν. Ἡ ταινία ἀποκαλύπτει τὴν καθημερινότητα στὸ κεντρικὸ μοναστήρι, μιὰ γνήσια κυψέλη, ὑπὸ ἀνοικοδόμηση, καθὼς καὶ τὰ ἐρημητήρια στὸ δάσος. Οἱ μοναχοὶ ἐργάζονται καλλιεργώντας τὴν γῆ μέσα σὲ ἀντιξοότητες τῶν καιρικῶν στοιχείων, ἁγιογραφοῦν, λειτουργοῦνται σὲ ἐκτενεῖς ἀγρυπνίες. Πρόκειται γιὰ ζωὴ μόνιμης πάλης μὲ τὸ ἐγώ, ζωὴ βασισμένη στὴν ὑπακοὴ καὶ τὴν ἀέναη προσευχή. Ἡ μοναστικὴ αὐτὴ ὀντότητα ἔχει τὶς ρίζες της στὴν ἐμπειρία τῶν πρώτων μοναχῶν τῆς Ἀνατολῆς, ποὺ τυγχάνει πρακτικῶς ἄγνωστη στὴν Δύση· ἔχει δὲ παρουσιάσει τὶς πιὸ ὁσιακὲς μορφὲς τῆς ρωσικῆς ἱστορίας.

Valaam, an archipelago of some fifty islands that is frozen for 8 months of the year in the ice of the largest lake in Europe is home to the oldest monastery in Russia.
